Research Assistant

Grade 6: £28,660 - £34,189 p.a.

A role has arisen within a team led by Professor Martin Maiden and Professor Marian Dawkins, for an enthusiastic and well organised person to perform laboratory work related to human Campylobacter disease, and also the gut microbiome of chicken flocks. The work is part of larger study exploring the epidemiology of human disease, and links between animal health and welfare.


Responsibilities will include being able to follow and adapt protocols for qPCR, prepare next-generation sequencing experiments, and to perform culture and DNA extraction of hazard group 2 bacterial pathogens, primarily Campylobacter. Duties also include general laboratory management, administration and stock control. You will be expected to analyse and share research findings in meetings with colleagues and to contribute to scientific reports and journal articles.


You must hold a first degree in a related subject, together with relevant experience of working in a containment level 2 laboratory. Excellent organisation, communication skills and attention to detail are essential. Previous experience of PCR, qPCR, next-generation sequencing, bacterial culture and good IT skills with experience of MS Office applications would be an advantage.


This is a full-time position for 6 months, or part-time (50% FTE) for 12 months, with a starting date for as soon as possible.
