This Project is funded by an ARC Linkage grant, Ecosystem risk assessment: new solutions to the global biodiversity crisis (LP170101143), a partnership between University of New South Wales, Deakin University, University of Queensland, the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), Wildlife Conservation Society, Provita, the Victorian Department of Environment Land Water and Planning, and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

 

The Research Fellow will initiate and conduct research in ecosystem risk assessment, management and conservation. They will collaborate on the development of a global ecosystem typology, model global distributions of ecosystem types and develop and undertake analyses to support a global-scale risk assessment of terrestrial ecosystems based on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems protocol. They will also lead scenario analyses of ecosystem management options.

 

About the role

  • $ = Level A through Level B depending on candidate plus 17% superannuation and leave loading

  • Fixed Term – 3 years

  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

 

The Research Fellow – Ecosystem Conservation Ecologist position is offered for up to 3 years. The position will involve a range of activities from designing and implementing global-scale spatial and time-series analyses, developing algorithms, analysing data and creating tools for environmental assessment. The position will involve writing and editing, and working closely with postdocs, undergraduate and graduate students. The position will be based at the Centre for Ecosystem Science within the School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES), UNSW Australia.

 

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

SELECTION CRITERIA LEVEL A

  • PhD in Science or in an equivalent field.

  • Demonstrated understanding of ecological processes across multiple organisational levels

  • Demonstrated research track record (relative to opportunity) in biodiversity conservation, ecology, spatial analysis and modelling at landscape scale.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ecological risk assessment, and the development and implementation of ecological models.

  • Demonstrated experience in management and visualisation of large ecological data sets, and in designing and implementing complex data analyses.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise research assistants.

  • Potential to attract research funding.

  • Excellent written, interpersonal and communication skills, and the capacity to work collaboratively.

  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA LEVEL B (in addition to the above)

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise postgraduate, honours students or research assistants.

  • Demonstrated research track record (relative to opportunity) in biodiversity conservation, ecology, spatial analysis and modelling at landscape scale, including leading the design, analysis and publications in leading journals.

  • Demonstrated experience in implementation of ecological risk assessment, and the development and implementation of ecological models.

  • Demonstrated research track record (relative to opportunity) in attracting research funding
