University Lecturer/ University Senior Lecturer x 3

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge is a world-leading biochemical research and education facility, building on the University's tradition of scientific enquiry to enable and support outstanding science. As a component of the School of Biological Sciences, our excellent undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes develop the next generation of scientists. Our 50 research groups, led by Investigators of international standing, collaborate with colleagues around the world to answer fundamental questions concerning how tissues, cells and their constituent molecules work, how their evolution contributes to the diversity of life, but also how their change or disruption can cause disease.

Research in the Department is grouped into nine themes: Chemical Biology & Drug Design, Disease Biology, DNA & Chromatin Biology, Molecular Microbiology, Plant Biochemistry & Bioenergy, Signalling & Trafficking, RNA Biology, Stem Cell Biology, and Systems Biology. These themes are not mutually exclusive, however, and numerous Investigators conduct research spanning multiple areas.

Over the next 12 months our Department has a number of faculty positions becoming available due to retirements and invites applications for the position of University Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professor).

Candidates will have an established or developing bibliography of research publications, demonstrate clear potential to publish high impact work and show the potential to achieve international stature in their field. They will demonstrate the vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths and develop a leading research presence within Biological Sciences, across the University and through broader collaboration. A Ph.D. or equivalent postgraduate qualification is essential. Standard faculty duties include teaching and research, examining, supervision and, at a later stage, contributing to the administration of the department. However, our teaching loads are relatively low by US or European standards, allowing our faculty to focus on research.

To realize the strategic aims of our department we are particularly seeking candidates with interests in the following areas: chemical and synthetic biology, biochemistry of bacteria, fungi and plants, cancer biology, RNA biology and mathematical/computational biology. However, we also welcome applications from outstanding candidates in any other area of biochemistry, molecular biology or molecular genetics. We particularly encourage people from under-represented groups to apply.

Depending on the experience of the successful candidate, the appointment will be made at the University Lecturer or University Senior Lecturer level. Appointments will be made during 2019.

The appointment comes with a generous start-up package, together with a competitive salary.
