DESCRIPTION

The Center for Biomolecular Sciences and Engineering (transitioning into the Genomics Institute Organized Research Unit, (https://ucscgenomics.soe.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Stem Cell Models Research Specialist, under the direction of Dr. Sofie Salama in the Salama/Haussler laboratory. The Research Specialist will support and assist in research that uses human and non-human primate pluripotent stem cells and high throughput sequencing assays to understand the evolution and function of genomic innovations that drive new gene regulatory programs and human brain development, and will support lab operations by assisting with ordering, chemical inventory, hazardous waste disposal and related functions. Other responsibilities may include designing and/or engineering pluripotent stem cell lines that allow CRISPR/Cas9 based overexpression or knockdown screens, generating pluripotent stem cell derived cerebral cortex organoids for single cell gene expression analysis and high throughput sequencing library generation and QC. The candidate will also make scholarly contributions to the research program through reading primary literature, preparing and/or editing scientific manuscripts and regular lab meeting presentations. The candidate will be expected to learn new techniques and implement protocols, have strong attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, exercise good time management and problem-solving skills, and work effectively in a team environment.

SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline at the time of application, and at least one year of biological wet lab experience, including mammalian cell culture and molecular biology experiments, that was achieved while earning and/or after obtaining the degree.

DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be full‐time through June 30, 2020, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
