The Institute of Marine Sciences ( at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Analytical Facilities Specialist. Under the direction of Interim Director Pete Raimondi, the Specialist will serve a diverse community of researchers in managing and supporting the following open-access facilities:

  • The Plasma Analytical Lab, which is equipped with Thermo X-Series and Element-XR plasma mass spectrometers, ICAP-Q 7400 Series plasma optical emission spectrometer, and a Photon Machines Laser Ablation system
  • The Marine Analytical Lab, a general-use lab that is equipped with a variety of chemical preparation and analysis equipment (e.g. IC, GC, GC-MS, HPLC, IC, UV-Vis, etc.).

The users of these facilities include researchers and students from multiple institutions, including the IMS; academic departments within and outside of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences at UCSC; other Universities; and institutions such as the US Geological Survey, and the National Marine Fisheries Service. These open-access facilities have a long history of being highly productive, due in large part to having had a knowledgeable and service-oriented lab manager in place for many years. The successful candidate will be given wide latitude in managing the priorities and research efforts conducted in the labs, while maintaining the long-standing effort to support a diverse user base and state-of-art analytical capabilities. Furthermore, the position will require that the Specialist be physically capable of lifting items weighing as much as thirty pounds and working in tightly confined spaces with or without accommodations.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: doctoral degree in the sciences; expertise in analytical chemistry; prior experience with running a similar facility; demonstrated record of working with research scientists in a cooperative and service-oriented role; record of writing clear, detailed reports, standard operating protocols, and technical guides; demonstrated record of strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently with little supervision; and a demonstrated record of troubleshooting and solving complex problems in a research environment.
