UCLA’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics is seeking to fill an Associate Project Scientist position. The Associate Project Scientist candidate will perform independent research on investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms that enable human-parasitic nematodes to find and infect their hosts. In addition, the candidate will need to develop new techniques and approaches for studying the function of sensory neural circuits in mammalian-parasitic nematodes.

The Associate Project Scientist will also be responsible for supervising graduate students and undergraduate student researchers, and preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals. This position requires a Ph.D. in Biology and a minimum of 4 years of experience in parasitology, neurobiology, molecular biology, and genetics. The Associate Project Scientist position is a 12-month non-Senate position.

Specific Responsibilities include:
Conducting research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying host-seeking behaviors in parasitic nematodes using molecular biology, genetic transformation, microscopy, and quantitative behavioral analysis.

Additional Duties:

• Supervision of undergraduates, graduate students, technicians, and new postdoctoral trainees in the lab.

• Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively.

• Ability to work independently on scientific projects.

• Assist with preparation of grant proposals.

• Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

• Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide.

• This position requires a Ph.D. in biology, parasitology, or neuroscience. Candidate should have at least 4 years of research experience in parasitology, neurobiology, molecular biology, and genetics in an academic setting or equivalent.

• Candidate should have extensive experience in standard molecular biology techniques, parasitic nematode culturing and transgenesis, animal research, nematode genetics, and quantitative behavioral analysis.

• The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.

• Ability to help and train various personnel in parasitic nematode biology, molecular biology, and genetics, and to make significant contributions to the design and execution of other laboratory members’ experiments.

• The candidate will be required to complete all appropriate safety training as mandated by the campus’s Environmental Health & Safety Office
