The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate Professor position in the non-tenure academic clinician track. Expertise is required in the specific area of clinical microbiology and one or more of its subspecialties (minimum of 6 years’ experience). The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in molecular infectious diseases diagnostics and knowledge of NGS technology for clinical diagnostics and metagenomics.

Teaching responsibilities may include active participation and supervision of teaching of fellows, pathology residents, medical students and laboratory staff in areas of medical microbiology.

Clinical responsibilities may include :

1. Fulfill the role as one of the directors of the clinical microbiology laboratory at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
2. Serve as a clinical consultant to the medical staff and other providers on test results and interpretation
3. Be involved with oversight of clinical test analysis and sign-out, quality control, innovation and test development
4. Work closely with the various infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship clinical teams.

Applicants must have an M.D. or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree. Board certified in clinical pathology (or AP/CP) and subspecialty certification by the American Board of Pathology or American Board of Medical Microbiology for MD candidates, and for PhD candidates, board certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology.

While research is not required for this track, applied, and/or translational research in the broad area of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases is encouraged.
