Description

The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley is recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in Molecular and Cell Biology. The University of California, Berkeley is a leading research university dedicated to providing undergraduate and graduate-level education in a broad range of disciplines. We are seeking an Associate Specialist ( Bioinformatics Scientist/Computational Biologist) for the Hockemeyer lab. The candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary group funded by the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) aimed at understanding how genetic differences between individuals create variability in cellular function and ultimately disease susceptibility. The Associate Specialist will develop analysis pipelines for studies generating high-throughput genomics data, including single-cell and bulk RNA-seq and perturb-seq data. The candidate will use and/or adapt existing computational pipelines and algorithms and write code to process and analyze genomic data sets, generate reports, and present the results to collaborators and funders. With supervision, s/he will work from standard analysis pipelines and learn to modify code to fit individual projects involving gene expression levels, RNA splicing and cell type-identifying signatures. S/he will interact closely with the ASAP team members and collaborate with other bioinformaticians doing similar work at UC, Berkeley, UCSF and elsewhere.

Responsibilities:

Develop analysis pipelines for studies generating high-throughput genomics data, including single-cell and bulk RNA-seq and perturb-seq data. Use and/or adapt existing computational pipelines and algorithms and write code to process and analyze genomic data sets, generate reports, and present the results to collaborators and funders. Work from standard analysis pipelines and learn to modify code to fit individual projects involving gene expression levels, RNA splicing and cell type-identifying signatures. Interact closely with the ASAP team members and train personnel to analyze genome-wide datasets. Collaborate with other bioinformaticians doing similar work at UC, Berkeley, UCSF and elsewhere across the ASAP consortium network.

Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:
Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Master's degree program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications required by the appointment start date:
Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) and a publication record.

Master’s or Ph.D. degree (or international equivalent) in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, computer science or related discipline.

Appointment:

This position reports to Professor Dirk Hockemeyer. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Salary and Benefits:

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience based on the UC Specialist series salary scale. For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit:
