The Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) (see http://www.drugdiscovery.dundee.ac.uk) is a fully integrated drug discovery operation based within a world class Life Sciences research environment. Its remit is to complement BioPharma activities by tackling both neglected diseases (trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and malaria) and early stage small molecule validation of novel targets & mechanisms across a range of potential therapeutics areas. The DDU works to Biotech style philosophy and standards incorporating, dynamic, goal driven project management based on Target Product Profiles and Compound Selection Criteria. The project goals are therapeutic area dependent but range from quality leads demonstrating disease model proof of concept, through to pre-clinical candidates.
 
 
We have a number of positions for highly motivated biologist to be part of a BioPharma experienced, multi-disciplinary team in the DDU. The post is available immediately. Salary will depend on experience, but will be up to £39,609. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in industry-style drug discovery within an academic setting.
 
 
An appointment may be considered at Grade 6 if the selected candidate does not meet the full skill set required for the post at a Grade 7.
 
 
Your responsibilities:
 

• Developing, assessing and proposing credible molecular targets
• Playing leadership roles in program teams or cross-discipline workgroups
• Providing innovative ideas in the development of the unit’s capabilities
• Developing relevant cell based assays to support drug discovery projects
• Screening and profiling novel compounds
• Designing and performing detailed mechanism of action studies
• Carrying out data analysis and relevant quality assurance protocols
• Working collaboratively with members of the Drug Discovery Unit and academic or industrial collaborators to support drug discovery programs

 

 

Your qualifications:
 
• A first or second degree in biochemistry, pharmacology or other relevant biological discipline
• Competency in a range of cell biology assay techniques
• Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
• A demonstrated ability to work in an organised manner and to standard operating procedures is essential 
• Experience of working in drug discovery is highly desired but is not essential
• An ability to be proactive, productive and to work effectively in teams is required.
 
 

Dundee, set on the east-coast of Scotland, lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty, including large sandy beaches and challenging hills. Rainfall charts show this is one of the sunniest and driest places in the UK.
