The University of Chicago seeks an experienced educator and leader to serve as the Director of its Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics (MScBMI) program. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Professional Programs, the Director maintains, sustains, and supports the quality, relevance, and growth of the degree program through oversight of curriculum, program revision and development, instructor hiring, student outcomes, budgeting, and supervision of relevant administrative personnel. This position will work closely and collaboratively with the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) and professional education colleagues to ensure the quality of the program and develop and execute its processes, policies, and procedures in a manner consistent with expectations of the University of Chicago.

 

Responsibilities:

Curriculum Oversight: 

  • Manage overall curricular quality for the program in collaboration with relevant academic department. 
  • Vet, hire, and review program faculty, in collaboration with the faculty advisory committee. 
  • Integrate feedback from students, board members, and employers into the curriculum for continuous improvement. 
  • Assist faculty in locating appropriate data sets, case studies, and applied materials for their courses. 
  • Assist students in developing appropriate capstone projects and locating a project mentor. 
  • Ensure appropriate student access to software programs for use in the program.

 

UC Faculty Advisory Committee: 

  • Lead meetings of the program’s advisory committee, at least annually, preparing agendas, materials, data, and evaluations for committee review. 
  • Maintain regular contact with committee members and fill vacant positions on the committee.

 

Instructor Review and Hiring: 

  • Oversee the instructor hiring process to ensure compliance with University HR policies and practices. 
  • Screen and interview adjunct lecturers for teaching appointment. 
  • Make recommendations for appointment to Provost’s office, with appropriate materials. 
  • Develop and implement a faculty review process in collaboration with other directors. 
  • Report regularly to senior leadership and the advisory board on faculty review matters. 

 

Budget and Financial Management: 

  • Oversee the program budgets and monitor program’s fiscal performance, within guidelines established by the University. 
  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure realization of the program’s annual budget target. 

 

Admissions and Registration: 

  • Work collaboratively with UCPE staff, including marketing, enrollment management, and other directors to ensure the quality and growth of programs in health and human sciences. 
  • Manage admissions review of prospective students. 

 

Student Support and Management: 

  • Ensure that program staff provide an outstanding student experience and provide a supportive learning environment.
  • Manage IRB process, as necessary, for student capstone projects. 
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean in staffing an external advisory board for applied degree areas to provide ongoing input from an industry perspective.

 

Staff hiring and Management: 

  • Oversee staff hiring process to ensure compliance with University HR policies and practices. 
  • Screen and interview candidates for Associate Director of Operations position.
  • Supervise the work of all direct reports, conduct annual performance reviews, review and revise position descriptions as necessary to ensure compliance and accuracy with job performed.
  • Ensure that all program team members are working to advance the programs’ goals and strategic priorities.

 

Team participation: 

  • Work collaboratively with other directors, administrators, and Faculty to ensure consistent, high-quality processes, policies, and procedures are implemented. 

 

Program Evaluation: 

  • Conduct annual evaluations to measure program quality; report progress to senior leadership, advisory committees, Faculty, and University officials. 
  • Conduct yearly program evaluations.

 Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certification:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field required; Ph.D. strongly preferred

 

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant management and/or academic administrative experience required
  • Experience with budget and staff management required
  • Teaching experience at the university level preferred
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team required
  • Ability to successfully navigate both an entrepreneurial and process-oriented environment strongly preferred
  • Evidence of project management competence preferred

 

Primary Work Location:

  • Cityfront Office Location , 455 Cityfront Plaza Dr, Chicago
  • This role will involve travel between campus locations (Gleacher Center and Hyde Park campus) as needed.
