Two Junior Researcher / PhD Positions (50%)

The Chair of Bioeconomy (Jun.-Prof. Dr. Franziska Schünemann) is looking for two junior researchers (50%, EG TV-L 13) to contribute to its economic and holistic bioeconomy research and teaching (starting date as soon as possible). We are looking for master graduates who are enthusiastic about the transformation of economies to sustainable bio-based economic systems and with open-mindedness to conduct interdisciplinary research.


The junior researchers will be engaged in the preparation and teaching of classes, the scientific supervision of students, assistance in chair administration and in particular in the research of the chair’s projects. The positions come with the opportunity to do a PhD. The research agenda can be chosen in agreement with the chair’s head and should focus on one of two research areas: either the analysis of the bioeconomy at the interplay of climate and energy policies (position 1) or the use of residues for energy and material production (position 2). In both research areas the junior researchers should contribute to the development of innovative and interdisciplinary simulation modeling systems to capture the economic, social and ecological spheres of the bioeconomy and to identify potential synergies and tradeoffs ex-ante. The positions thus offer ideal conditions for a successful PhD and the development of a unique scientific profile.

Your Profile

    • An excellent or very good master level degree in economics or applied economics (e.g. bioeconomy, agricultural economics, natural resource economics, environmental economics, ecological economics), or related disciplines
    • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research of the bioeconomy, experience in interdisciplinary work is an advantage
    • Very good background in quantitative and empirical methods (e.g. statistics and econometrics) and experience in using established statistic software packages (e.g. STATA, R); experience in simulation modeling and software (e.g. GAMS, MATLAB) is an advantage
    • The ability to work individually as well as in the team and to contribute to the research agenda of the chair
    • Initiative and sense of responsibility
    • Very good knowledge of the English language, knowledge of German at least at B1/B2 level

The Chair of Bioeconomy is part of the Institute of Economics at the University of Hohenheim and offers the infrastructure of a modern research environment and excellent contacts to the scientific community. The Chair of Bioeconomy is also a member of the Computational Science Lab of the University of Hohenheim which facilitates collaborations with all faculties. An active participation in scientific conferences is welcomed and supported. The positions are offered with 50% of a full time equivalent (19,75h/week, salary based on German public sector pay scale EG TV-L 13) with an initial contract period of three years.
