Position Summary
Michigan State University invites applications for two, full-time Academic year, fixed term Biology academic specialist position in the Lyman Briggs College (LBC), an undergraduate science and liberal arts community (http://lbc.msu.edu). We are searching for two innovative and scholarly teachers fill these temporary positions. Individuals must have the ability to instruct both lecture and laboratory courses, using modern, evidence-based teaching approaches. The successful candidates will teach introductory biology lectures and laboratory courses in LBC for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters (August 16, 2020-May 15, 2021).

We are seeking one candidate broadly trained in cellular and molecular biology and one candidate broadly trained in organismal biology (ecology, evolution, diversity of life). Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic about joining the community of teaching-focused faculty within LBC. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates and will have experience using active learning pedagogical techniques. The position offers candidates the opportunity to teach in a small, liberal-arts college environment with all of the resources provided by a large research university.

LBC is a vibrant undergraduate, residential, liberal arts and science college at MSU focusing on the study of science as well as its interactions with society. The LBC curriculum attempts to help students integrate natural sciences and mathematics courses with courses in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science.

Duties: Teach both biology lab and lecture classes during each semester. Teaching assignment is considered a 2:3 or 3:2 load that includes both lecture and lab settings. Lectures are typically 48 students and labs are typically 24 students. Supervise undergraduate learning assistants and graduate teaching assistants, if assigned. Hold office hours. Participate in pedagogical development with other Biology faculty.

Doctorate -Biology

Minimum Requirements
The successful applicants will be dedicated and innovative teachers. Requirements include a strong record of teaching, and a Ph.D. in Biology or Biology Education. Demonstrated potential for excellence and innovation in student- centered instruction. Demonstrated interest in science teaching pedagogy, curriculum and program development. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Cover Letter, Curriculum Vitae, contact information for 3 references, and concise teaching portfolio (max 20 pages) with: (a) 1-2 page Teaching Philosophy, (b) Description/Example of experience teaching laboratory exercises and/or proposed multi-week laboratory exercise idea(s). Note: We prefer you lead students to propose and pursue one experiment for multiple weeks (as done in inquiry or CURE labs) rather than perform traditional weekly cookbook lab experiments.
