Position Description

The School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington Tacoma seeks to appoint a Part-Time Lecturer to a 2-year, non-tenure track appointment in restoration ecology instruction to begin January 2020. This is a part-time, 9 month position (September – June).

 

The lecturer will teach a 7-credit hour field course in Restoration Ecology in Autumn quarter, and a course for Environmental Sustainability and non-science majors in Winter quarter of the first year, and in Winter or Spring quarter of subsequent years, dependent on resources and student needs.

 

In coordination with the tri-campus UW Restoration Ecology Network, the lecturer will also lead students through a 10-credit hour capstone experience during Fall (2 credits), Winter (3 credits), and Spring (5 credits) quarters.  In this role, the lecturer must work closely with Tacoma community partners (such Tacoma Metro Parks) and other stakeholders to facilitate students as they help establish, manage, and monitor restoration sites. Some elements of this capstone series are taught at the Seattle campus in conjunction with other faculty from UW Bothell and UW Seattle.

 

This position may be renewed pending a review during its second year.

 

The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was founded in 1990 with an interdisciplinary approach at its foundation. Qualifications

Candidates should have a Master's degree or higher in a relevant field (such as Ecology, Environmental Science, Restoration Ecology, Conservation Biology) and/or 2 or more years’ experience teaching Restoration Ecology at the college/university level. The successful applicant will be a dynamic teacher with the ability to support independent student work, lead community-based learning projects, and to engage with students from a culturally diverse population.  Field experience and knowledge of local plant ecology and regional ecosystems is highly desirable.
