Queen Mary is one of the largest colleges in the University of London and one of the UK's leading research-intensive institutions, joining the Russell Group in 2012, recently ranked in the top 10 of UK Universities (REF2014) and frequently ranked in the top 100 in the world QS ranking. QMUL has made a strategic commitment to world-class research and teaching across all its disciplines. The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences is a large and expanding academic unit, which provides a supportive and friendly environment and encourages interdisciplinary research. We are investing in the acknowledged strengths in the School to advance its areas of internationally-competitive activity.  Recent investment in research infrastructure incudes new facilities for cryo-electron microscopy and dynamic fluorescence microscopy. We have strong links with other Schools within the Faculty as well as with Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and the cross-disciplinary Institutes of Bioengineering and Materials Research. The School is also involved in an exciting joint venture with Nanchang University in biomedicine and contributes to the Life Sciences Initiative.

Applications are invited from candidates who will contribute to the delivery of high-quality research, teaching and administration in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences by:

  • Making significant research contributions in Biochemistry or related fields as demonstrated by recent papers in high quality journals and competitively awarded research grant income or convincing potential to generate income. The ability to contribute to and benefit from one or more of our research strengths in: Photosynthesis, Bioenergetics & Microbial Physiology, Structural Biology, Protein mis-folding or Chromosome Biology & Cytoskeletal Networks would be an advantage.
  • Teaching and the assessment of student achievement in Biochemistry.
  • Contributing to the administration of these and other College activities.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of publishing high quality papers and the ability to establish an internationally-competitive research group.

The School is committed to Athena SWAN principles to promote women in science; we positively welcome applications from women and black and ethnic minorities, who are currently under-represented in the school. A competitive remuneration package and start-up funds are negotiable, but we will also be happy to consider applications from people with their own funding who wish to explore proleptic positions in the School.
