Phd Fellow In Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases (Lpmos) In Plant Pathogens

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) in plant pathogens, commencing 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The PhD project is an integral part of the HOPE project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. This is a collaboration between the Section for Molecular Plant Biology at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences and the Section for Forest, Nature and Biomass, at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management. The project also includes the Department of Chemistry, UCPH, the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR), and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (CFB). The successful applicant will thus join a vibrant international research environment.

Project description

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the understanding of the biological function of LPMOs expressed by plant pathogens. This will require development of both in vitro and in vivo assays and it will require handling of both plants and microorganisms. For this study, it will be possible to use a full microscopic toolbox in combination with mass spectroscopy and enzyme assays. The successful applicant will work closely together with a junior scientist who is deeply engaged in the research field.

We are seeking a motivated and creative PhD student who displays enthusiasm and good interpersonal and communication skills. Candidates with documented knowledge on microbial plant pathogens and skills in analysis of plant physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, and enzyme activity assays are preferred. Further, applicants with documented experience in completing a scientific manuscript will be prioritized

Principal supervisor is Katja Salomon Johansen, Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, respectively. E-mail: ksj@ign.ku.dk.
