PhD Position in Bioactive and Transmembrane Peptides
University of Gothenburg Faculty of Science

PhD Student in Bioactive and Transmembrane Peptides

Diary id: PAR 2020/367
Employment level: Fixed term
Location: Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology
Apply by: 2020-04-07

A third cycle education at our department will lead to a Ph.D. in Natural sciences, or Natural sciences with a specialisation in Chemistry, Biology or Biophysics. Ph.D. studies comprises four years at the post graduate level. The time period can be extended to 5 years in total through teaching and/or other departmental duties.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented person for functional studies of bioactive and transmembrane peptides. Bioactive peptides can be derived from various sources, including the venom of spiders, snakes or cone snails. The components of the venom are peptides of 20-30 amino acids and are usually very selective towards their targets, usually transmembrane proteins. The objective of this project is to explore the function of selected bioactive peptides, design of their analogs and use developed in our lab synthetic strategies for production of transmembrane proteins.

  • Solid phase peptide synthesis
  • Liquid-phase synthesis (Organic chemistry)
  • Engineering of peptide mimetics
  • Peptide purification/ analysis: analytical and preparative HPLC, Mass spectrometry (ESI)
  • CD and NMR spectroscopy
  • Bioactivity/interaction assays: FRET, HPLC-based assays

The candidate will be part of a Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine in Gothenburg (

Subject area: peptide chemistry/ characterization/ bioactivity/ interaction studies/ structure determination
