Disorders of sex development (DSD) are not fully understood. Genetic variants in SF1/NR5A1 may cause DSD with a very broad range of phenotypes in humans. We try to understand this broad phenotype by searching for influencing factors. In a large cohort of DSD individuals with a SF1 variation NGS will reveal additional genetic hits that we will interogate for their impact on sex development using established cell models and novel stem cell based models.

Our molecular endocrinology research lab within DBMR is interested in rare disorders of sex and steroid development. Our aim is to understand the biology of rare disorders, their genetic background and the consequences. Aim is to provide information for personalized medicine for individuals with these rare conditions.

Tasks

During your PhD, you will: (1) work on the described project in an established team and wet-lab learning a broad range of molecular and cellular experimental methods, (2) collaborate with an interdisciplinary clinical team dealing with the clinical and genetic part of the project, (3) board the Graduate School of Cellular and Biomedical Science of University of Bern (GCB), and (4) receive your PhD degree of Univ of Bern.

Requirements

Applicants must have a university degree in biology, life sciences or related field and a strong interest in molecular endocrinology, genetics and cell biology. Previous experience in molecular and cellular lab work is mandatory. The position requires fluency in English as our lab team is international. Applicant must fulfill/pass the criteria of our GCB (https://www.gcb.unibe.ch/).
