The Laboratory of Biosignaling & Therapeutics, headed by Prof. Mathieu Bollen, has a long-standing interest in the regulation of proteins by reversible phosphorylation. A position is available for a motivated PhD student to explore how protein kinases and phosphatases work together to generate pulse-like signaling responses.

Research project:

We have recently identified a biochemical timer that controls the mid-mitotic checkpoint. This timer stems from the integration of a counteracting kinase and phosphatase, and serves to activate the checkpoint before a sensor-dependent mechanism becomes operational. Our next goal is to explore whether other checkpoints associated with DNA replication and cell division are also governed by consecutive timer-sensor mechanisms, and to develop the therapeutic potential of such timers. The practical work will involve a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology and cell imaging.
