PostDoc Position for the Project: Engineering Macrophages for Cancer Immunotherapy

We have a very active program in experimental HIV medicine, in particular immunotherapy and gene engineering an HIV resistant immune system, and in gene-engineering monocytes/macrophages to fight cancer. We use all kinds of in vitro and in vivo methods. Ultimate goal is to gain insight into HIV pathogenesis, the immune network and to advance gene engineering as well as to provide pre-clinical proof of concept for future clinical trials.

The laboratory of Dr. Speck is very well embedded in the research place of Zurich and benefits from its unique scientific richness. Notably, we have very active international collaborations for the gene engineering part (Prof. Michael Pepper, University of Pretoria (SA) and Prof. Karl-Heinz Krause, University of Geneva (CH)), for studying IFNs (Prof. Gideon Schreiber, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel) and for immunotherapy (Prof. Giuseppe Pantaleo, University of Lausanne and Prof. Renata Stripecke, University of Hannover).

The laboratory is well financed by various foundations, among others by the Swiss National Science, Swiss Vaccine Institute and the VonTobel Foundation.

Your responsibilities

We are looking for highly motivated person as PostDoc for our project: "Engineering Macrophages for Cancer Immunotherapy". Thus we need a person capable in setting up the in vitro and in vivo experiments, the desired profile is listed below. The project is related to "Human chimeric antigen receptor macrophages for cancer immunotherapy" (M. Klichinsky et al., 2020), but is a more sophisticated approach. Please note, the project is a high risk, high gain project, which, when it is successful, will be translated to a clinical application.

Your profile

  • PhD in tumor immunology, cell biology or cancer immunotherapy
  • Excellent hands-on experience with ex vivo human primary 2D and 3D tumor tissue culture models/organoids or in vivo tumor mouse models
  • A must is excellent hands-on experience in state-of-the art immunoprofiling techniques for functional characterization of immune responses (FACS-based cell sorting, multiparametric FACS analysis of tumor and immune cells)
  • Willingness to work with mice is mandatory.
  • Excellent written and verbal English is mandatory
  • Strong inter-personal, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively and independently within a diverse group of people
  • Excellent organizational skills, high flexibility, and the ability to take initiative
  • FELASA B permit is a plus
  • Experience with single RNA sequencing, CyTOF, IF, imaging, spatial-omics and high dimensional data analysis is a plus
  • Experience with vectors for gene engineering and state-of-the-art molecular biological methods is a plus
