Postdoc in Metal-Organic Frameworks as Low-K Dielectrics and in Capacitive Sensors

The Ameloot Group at KU Leuven is looking for a motivated postdoctoral candidate to develop a new generation of high-performance dielectrics and capacitive gas sensors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Due to their porous nature, MOFs show a low polarizability and are one of the top candidates for on-chip integration as high-performance 'low-k' dielectrics. In this role, MOFs can increase the working speed and power efficiency of chips. Additionally, the uniform and tunable pores in MOFs are highly appealing for sensor applications. Our goal is to break the synthesis and processing barriers that prevent MOF materials from entering commercial implementation in these application areas. In this context, our group developed a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach for MOFs, which is compatible with cleanroom fabrication (, and recently demonstrated the successful integration of MOFs as low-k materials by this method (



In this postdoctoral project, you will focus on the integration of MOFs as low-k dielectrics and in capacitive gas sensors, working together with scientists and engineers with complementary expertise  in materials synthesis, gas adsorption, the characterization of porous and crystalline materials, etc.  For more information on the research group coordinating this project, please refer to  and .Parts of this research are performed in close collaboration with the nanoelectronics research center imec (


We are looking for:


  • A motivated candidate with a strong academic track record and a PhD in Microelectronics, Materials Chemistry, Physics, or a related field in Science and Engineering.
  • A candidate with a passion for novel materials, chemistry and technology, and willing to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Previous demonstrations of out-of-the-box thinking. Bonus points if you consider yourself a 'maker' and practical problem solver, we appreciate what you are doing!
  • Since we target real-world applications through our research, an interest in valorization (e.g., spin-off creation) is a plus.
  • Since we are a highly international team, proficiency in both written and spoken English is non-negotiable.



Please consider applying if you have several of thefollowing skills:


  • Expertise in electrical characterization of dielectric thin films (required). Knowledge of capacitance simulations is a plus.
  • Experience in materials synthesis (strongly desired).
  • Experience in integrating new materials in microelectronics and general thin film characterization.
  • Performing on-chip measurements or building sensor test setups, including computer interfacing and data acquisition.
  • Cleanroom fabrication, including packaging and testing.
  • Data analysis based on statistical concepts (e.g., chemometrics).
