A postdoctoral position is available in the Laboratory of Bioengineering and Morphogenesis at KU Leuven, Belgium. Our research focuses on understanding the relationship between cell fate and morphogenesis in bioengineered organoid model systems. In particular, we aim at exploring the role of mechanics during differentiation and morphogenesis of human neural tube and paraxial mesoderm organoids.

Responsibilities

The research position aims at deploying our recently developed artificial extracellular matrices, microfluidic devices and active force manipulation techniques to understand mechanisms of symmetry-breaking, growth and patterning. The candidate will be involved in developing an integrated framework for quantifying cellular forces in complex, 3D multicellular culture systems, as well as in leveraging microfluidic tools to explore the relationship between cell fate and patterning and morphogenesis in organoid model systems.

Profile

You are a developmental or stem cell biologist interested in combining your knowledge and skillset to build and characterize synthetic biomimetic organoid model systems with our laboratory’s tools and quantitative approach. Candidates must have a PhD degree in developmental biology, stem cell biology, biophysics or related. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in molecular biology and at least one of the following areas of expertise: quantitative imaging and image analysis, CRISPR genome engineering, RNAseq (preferably single cell), in-situ hybridization. This project is part of 3DMuSyc, a collaborative multidisciplinary initiative at KU Leuven focusing on the role of mechanics in organoid biology, which brings together research groups from the Leuven Stem Cell Institute and the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry. The success of this project will require active interaction with experts ranging from cell and molecular biology, stem cell technology, to cell and matrix mechanics, biosensor and biomaterials development, as well as advanced microscopy and image analysis.

Offer

The position is available immediately. The funding for this position is secured for three years (with possibility of extension). We offer an international, interdisciplinary and challenging research environment, with many opportunities for collaboration, both at and outside KU Leuven and exposure to cutting-edge technology. KU Leuven offers a competitive salary, including extensive social security. KU Leuven is among the top European universities and a hub for interdisciplinary research at the interface of engineering and biomedical sciences. The city of Leuven offers a historical and vibrant international environment with a rich socio-cultural life.
