Postdoctoral Position in Neurobiology

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 46.000 students, 7.300 employees and a turnover of SEK 7.3 billion.

The Department of Organismal Biology teach about, and explores the evolution, development and function on the organismal level. We study the deepest branches of the tree of life with the help of bioinformatics and experimental molecular techniques. Research about how chemicals of anthropogenic origin interact with cellular functions and cause long-lasting adverse health effects in humans and wildlife is also performed. For more information see www.iob.uu.se.

The position is available in professor Åsa Mackenzie´s laboratory where we work with neurocircuitry analysis of the basal ganglia and associated structures. We use electrophysiological, behavioral, histological and molecular methods in combination with pharmacological and/or optogenetic approaches in rodents. Our research goal is to advance the preclinical knowledge around affective/cognitive disorders such as addiction and compulsive disorders, and both motor and non-motor dysfunction in Parkinson´s disease.

Duties/Project description:

Plan, perform and analyse optogenetic, electrophysiological and/or pharmacological studies including behavior analyses, small rodent brain surgery, histological analyses and molecular biological analyses such as PCR. Write and complete scientific manuscripts presenting own results.

Requirements:

To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in preclinical, experimental medicine, pharmacology or natural sciences with focus on the affective or motor circuits within the brain (neuroscience/neurobiology or similar). The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

You must have documented laborative experience of mouse genetics and basic molecular biology and a FELASA certificate or equivalent. Excellent knowledge in written and spoken English, as well as documented experience of writing scientific texts. Ability to work both independently and in a team.
