Postdoctoral Positions in Microbiology / Molecular Biology / Analytical Chemistry
University of Gothenburg

Two postdoctoral positions at the University of Gothenburg, both in the areas of microbiology/molecular biology/analytical chemistry

Do you want to work on research projects within the framework of sustainability and develop new innovative processes to solve industrial problems?  Do you have good laboratory skills and would enjoy leading applied research projects in industrial biotechnology?

Job description:

The first position is part of a project examining the role of microbial populations in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), anaerobic digesters and in hydroponics (HYP) units with the goal of better understanding conditions that will maximise beneficial transfers of microbes and their products among components of decoupled aquaponics systems.

The second position will involve work on bacterial relationships related to biofloc, biofilms and pathogens within Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). The candidate will be responsible for cultivation in bioreactor systems of specific novel microbial assemblages that contribute to enhanced growth and well-being of live fish feed (rotifers, brine shrimp) widely used in aquaculture and ultimately the fish larvae feeding on them.  Objectives for achieving project goals include: i) increased production of energy storage and other growth-enhancing compounds such as polyhydroxybutyrate in biofloc iv) heterotrophic and autotrophic microalgal enhancement of feed quality ii) characterization of nutrients and their bioavailability in biomass iii) acceptability and uptake by live invertebrate feed organisms v) and physiological effects on gut health.

  • running applied experiments in several different labs, thus requiring flexibility for extended stays in various locations as well as international travel to participate in meetings, working groups, conferences and visits with research partners;
  • advising students in their scientific research, including research design and statistical analyses;
  • leading occasional outreach activities (e.g. training courses, field days, workshops events) and working with a wide range of personnel to accomplish research tasks (e.g. students, academic and extension personnel within the consortium, biotechnologists, investors/industry).

A start date is ideally prior to June 1, 2020, but the exact start date for the positions is negotiable depending on the availability of a suitable candidate. The post-doctoral fellow will be hired for a two-year period to lead this project. You will have a full spectrum of vacation and leave benefits, as well as coverage from national health and business travel insurance.
