Overview:

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in Dr Robert Knell’s group, to work on the BBSRC-funded project “Sex ratio distorters and resistance management”.

The successful candidate should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Evolutionary Biology, Ecology or a related field. They should provide evidence of expertise in experimental evolution or similar approaches and in data analysis, preferably with expertise in R. Experience in working with insect model systems is highly desirable, as is either experience in or a keen interest in learning mathematical modelling techniques. Self-motivation, an ability to lead a project and excellent research management and interpersonal skills are essential.

The post-holder will conduct research on the influence of sex ratio distorters on adaptation rates, specifically with regards to the evolution of pesticide resistance in insects. This will involve laboratory evolution experiments using Drosophila, and also the development and analysis of mathematical models of sex ratio distorters and biocide resistance evolution. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the experimental evolution work and will manage a research technician who will assist with this. They will also be expected to analyse the experimental data and report it in the form of conference presentations and research papers. The later part of the project will shift towards the modelling component and we will expect the post holder to make a significant contribution in this area, with training provided if necessary. In addition to working with Dr Knell the candidate will work closely with the collaborators Dr. Thomas Price (Liverpool) and Prof. Michael Bonsall (Oxford) with frequent visits to both cities as part of the ongoing project.

All postdoctoral researchers are part of the QMUL Doctoral College, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

At QMUL, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence and we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

The post is located on the Mile End campus in London, it is full-time and available for up to 36 months. The start date is August 1st 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary is in Grade 4-5, in the range of £31,613 - £38,084 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance.
