Role Description

The Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity is seeking to recruit a creative and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associate (Data Analyst) with strong communication skills to develop and undertake research using a wide range of biodiversity, social science and humanities data sources. You will be based at the University of York within the Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity, which is a major new interdisciplinary research centre funded by The Leverhulme Trust to increase knowledge of how the relationship between humanity and the natural world is changing, and how we might maintain and develop a sustainable Earth.

You will be a data science researcher with a background of data development, management and analysis in the sciences, social sciences or humanities, and you will be excited about tackling fundamental research questions in the context of environmental and societal change. You will develop and carry out research projects and write them up for publication; you will obtain, generate, configure and analyse internal and external databases (and other information resources) for use in your own and collaborative research projects; and you will advise other researchers on analytical approaches so as to increase the effectiveness of research in the Centre.

You will have a high level of knowledge and skills in a wide range of statistical and analytic methods (e.g., statistical modelling, Bayesian statistics, meta-analysis), knowledge of commonly used programming languages and statistical packages (e.g., R, Python, C++, Stata), knowledge of current data practices (e.g., sharing, archiving), and knowledge of global environmental, societal, and/or cultural data sources. You will have a PhD or equivalent experience, and will have the ability to provide statistical and analytical advice to other researchers, who will be from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and have varying levels of data analytic and computational experience.

You will possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and have the capacity to work on your own and in collaboration. You will be creative and enthused at the prospect of collaborating with researchers from a wide range of backgrounds. You will be excited at using your analytical skills to facilitate and carry out research into the interactions between biodiversity and societal change.

The post is available on a fixed-term contract for 4 years and salary will be in the range £32,236 - £39,609 a year.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be made to Centre Director, Professor Chris Thomas, via email: chris.thomas@york.ac.uk.

The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit. We offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds.
