School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences

The School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) combines the disciplines of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Parasitology into a single academic unit. The School has modern research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and research infrastructure. About This Opportunity

The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative structural biology program that seeks to characterise and elucidate the structures of important microbial virulence factors, with a principle focus on the use of cutting edge cryo-electron microscopy techniques to elucidate biomolecular structures. You will benefit from access to world class cryo-EM facilities that include a recent investment in Australia’s first JEOL CryoARM automated TEM platforms and will have a unique opportunity to contribute to and direct UQ’s growing critical mass in structural cryo-EM.

In addition to your own laboratory work, you will help oversee day-to-day operations and assist more junior laboratory members as required in order to achieve project related goals. You will be responsible for experimental design, data analyses, and manuscript preparation, and will also be expected to apply for both independent and collaborative funding.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking candidates with a PhD (or equivalent) in the areas of structural biology with demonstrated experience in cryo-electron microscopy, bimolecular structure determination or a closely related technical discipline.

You must have evidence of high-level contribution to research, including an established track record of peer-reviewed publications and/or successful external grant applications as well as highly developed teamwork and communication skills, including excellent record keeping, written and interpersonal skills. Enthusiastic and highly motivated candidates with experience in the application or development of cutting edge technologies and methodologies in modern cryo-electron microscopy techniques are strongly encouraged to apply.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information if you require additional support. Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to recruitment@uq.edu.au.

You will be able to take advantage of UQ Sport Facilities, recreation leave loading (of 17.5%), salary sacrificing options, on-campus childcare, discounted private health insurance, cheap parking, development programs and many other benefits.
