DESCRIPTION

The UCI Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar for Professor Kyriacos Athanasiou ‘s DELTAi group (http://sites.uci.edu/deltai/). The main research objectives are to engineer device- and biologically-based solutions to medical problems. Work will begin in the neuro-orthopaedics area (e.g., neuromodulation of the peripheral nervous system), but may broaden into other medical specialties as well. The individual is expected to conduct research in the area of neuroengineering with applications in the musculoskeletal systems and a particular emphasis on articular cartilage.

 

Particular skills are needed in the fields of bioelectricity and bioinstrumentation. Though not critical, additional expertise in tissue engineering and histological, biochemical, and mechanical techniques is desirable. Additional work may include mechanical testing, and histological and biochemical assays. Duties will include designing experiments and conducting independent research, preparing study results for publication, and supervising/training graduate and undergraduate students in proper laboratory research techniques and record-keeping.

 

Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Background with hands-on experience in prototyping, biophotonics, and preferably medical devices as well is preferred but not required. It is expected that the candidate will be comfortable initiating projects independently. Experience with cell culture is preferred but not required. Excellent verbal and communications skills in the English language are required. Note: Total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at other institutions.

 

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and years of experience.
