Job description

The Globe Institute is a newly established department at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The Globe Institute focusses on fostering interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach, and therefore has a strong focus on developing transformative science spanning all parts of our planet’s history. When considering applications for this Professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of Computational Biodiscovery, with a particular focus on AI driven phage discovery.

In particular, the post has been created to advance the analysis of the ever increasing number of large metagenome datasets now being generated from all environments across our planet, in particular through the development and implementation of machine learning approaches. 

Candidates will be considered for the professorship on the basis of the following selection criteria, which they should address in their application:

  • An outstanding research record of international stature in the development and application of the field of computational biodiscovery, combined with strong evidence of the ability to integrate such research within both the basic and applied context
  • The vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to work with colleagues in and beyond the Globe Institute to maintain and extend into new domains Copenhagen's reputation for excellence and innovation, as well as to ensure the successful planning, funding and management of large scale computing facilities
  • An outstanding track record of success in major research grant acquisition from both national and international (in particular EU) sources, and in the forging of large-scale international collaborations and projects
  • The ability to further the academic planning and strategic development of bioinformatic in the Institute, University, Denmark and internationally
  • The ability to manage and interact effectively with staff and students at all levels, as well as strong evidence of the ability to work cooperatively and constructively with a team of colleagues, both from a position of leadership and in terms of peer-to-peer interaction
  • An enthusiastic commitment to, and track record of, the active recruitment, training and career development of the next generation of researchers, with specific regard to research students and postdoctoral research fellows.

Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent postgraduate qualification.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Research-based public-sector consultancy

The candidate must be able to document outstanding research experience at an international level within the following topics:

  • Life science supercomputing
  • Computational discovery within genomes, metagenomes and viromes
  • Application of machine learning methods in life science
  • AI driven phage discovery
  • Development of large scale analysis pipelines
  • Handling of large scale big data projects including data governance

Qualifications are also expected within the following areas:

  • Management of research projects
  • Strong experience with international collaborations
  • Research-based collaborations together with industrial partners
  • Ability to develop collaborative research project ideas
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills
  • Fluency in English is considered essential, a Scandinavian language is an asset

The successful applicant should also be able to:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Provide research-based teaching

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.


Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

Application procedure

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post.
