Project Manager
Catholic University of Leuven

A position is available for a project manager at the group of Prof. Thierry Voet at KU Leuven Department of Human Genetics. The position is intended to establish and manage a lab for spatial biology services at scale in Leuven, in close collaboration with VIB and the European Spatial Biology Center (ESBC NV). You will become part of a team that contributes to leading international research, where you will play a key role in the day-to-day activities.

Spatial biology is a revolutionary emerging field allowing researchers to study cells within their own 2D or 3D context. This opens new avenues to study biological processes in humans and other organisms in health and disease during different stages of development, leading to novel breakthrough discoveries.
The projects to be carried out will be mostly industrial but also academic projects, in addition to new spatial method development or implementation projects. The projects will encompass a wide range of biological disciplines and application areas, including oncology and neuroscience, but also plant and animal sciences, and others. Through your efforts, you shall make a significant contribution to help answer key fundamental biological questions with high impact in their respective fields.
Support the establishment and daily activities of a brand-new laboratory space for running spatial biology services and projects at scale, in close collaboration between the KU Leuven Institute for Single Cell Omics (LISCO), VIB and the European Spatial Biology Center (ESBC).
  • Perform the core management and coordination of (service) projects for running spatial (multi-)omics experiments, making use of custom protocols and innovative automated instrumentation to analyze important tissue or cell culture samples. For this, you will work together with a project manager assistant and an initial team of three technicians, a project engineer, and a bioinformatician.
  • Be the bridge between the team’s scientific work and operations. Serve as a key point-of-contact for the team and promote interaction and communication between all collaborating parties
  • Be responsible for accurate project management, design, coordination, planning, follow-up, securing ethical/legal/biobank/GDPR compliance, reporting, chairing project/steering meetings, and interactions with third parties. The project manager assistant will help in diverse administrative tasks, including those relating to ethical/legal/biobank/GDPR compliance, reporting and meetings.
  • Manage and execute customer projects according to defined timelines, while following industry and regulatory standards, and standard operating procedures (including ethical/legal compliance)
  • Engage with customers and collaborators throughout the life cycle of a project
  • Ensure that team members adhere to work plans, communicate about problems and resource needs and you assemble groups for ad hoc discussions if necessary
  • Organize, chair and moderate frequent project meetings, report and follow up on action items, and ensure that the team is on track with milestones
  • Assist in designing or optimizing third-party projects, help identify innovative ideas and opportunities for services, projects, and scientific collaborations
  • Coordinate your day-to-day activities with the work of the other scientists within your team to balance the overall priorities.

We are looking for a lead project manager who is enthusiastic, highly motivated, well-organized, and dynamic with a high level of independence and creative thinking:
  • PhD-level training, with a background in life sciences (e.g., bio-engineering, biomedical sciences, biology, pharmacy, medicine, veterinary science…)
  • Motivation and ambition to make a personal contribution to spatial biology/omics
  • Strong management and organizational skills, high level of work accuracy, flexible nature, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience with and knowledge of project management, coordination, and reporting
  • Ability to lead a small multidisciplinary (international) team, work independently and be a team player in a fast-paced environment
  • Hands-on experience in a life sciences research laboratory is a plus
  • Experience with single-cell and/or spatial (multi-)omics research is a plus
  • Experience with ethical/legal/biobank/GDPR compliance procedures is a plus
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and diplomatic skills
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Interested to work at the interface of industry and academia
