Position description

The Kramer lab is in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department and affiliated with the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. The lab seeks to understand fundamental molecular and cellular events underlying visual sensory perception and storage and retrieval of information during learning and memory. Much of work focusses on the mammalian retina, both in its normal healthy state, and in mouse and rate models of blinding disease resulting from degeneration of rod and cone photoreceptors. We have taken a multi-disciplinary approach, employing electrophysiology, optical imaging, chemistry, molecular biology, and behavior, to understand, mitigate, and reverse changes in the retina that contribute to vision loss.

This is a position for an experienced project scientist who will be involved in the continued development of programs in my lab, particularly those employing electrophysiology and optical imaging methods. The successful candidate will be involved in many aspects of our projects, including the design and implementation of experiments, data analysis, preparation of figures and manuscripts, training of postdoctoral fellow and graduate students, and preparation of research grants. They will be working closely with the PI to obtain additional extramural support to fund these projects.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree, publication record in scientific journals. At least 15 years of post-PhD experience.

Preferred qualifications

At least five years of experience in a neurobiological research program, leading to at least 4 peer-reviewed scientific publications in which the candidate is the primary or communicating author. This would include publishing original work in highly respected scientific journals, the mentoring of pre and postdoctoral trainees, and successfully obtaining extramural funding from either governmental or private sources. The applicant should also have a publication record in molecular/cellular mechanisms of synaptic transmission in the Central Nervous System. Expertise in retina is highly desirable.
