The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Cambridge has partnered with the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens in Ghana to investigate diagnostics for resource poor countries. A research associate position is available with the Cambridge Analytical Biotechnology team, University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will work in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Cambridge. Some time may also be spent at the University of Ghana. The project will be under the supervision of Prof. Lisa Hall (Cambridge) and Prof. Gordon Awandare (Ghana).

The Collaboration involves the development of diagnostics for febrile disease outbreaks to enable informed treatment and targeted antibiotic use. The Cambridge team have developed a new technology for design of proteins for analytical use. Taking a synthetic biology and molecular biology approach, the project aims to build on this technology for transfer to low resource settings.

The successful candidate will be expected to assume intellectual leadership in driving the development of the diagnostic and its application, as well as contributing to wider, ongoing development of programmes of disease diagnostics for resource poor settings. This will involve integration with teams working in Cambridge, Ghana and partners in other countries, driving the underpinning technology, making key design decisions, and ensuring their realisation.

Applicants must have:

1.) A degree in a relevant discipline such as analytical biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology etc.

2.) Understanding of and ideally experience of antibody testing configurations or nucleic acid amplification methods.

3.) An outstanding publication record or demonstration of excellent research potential for a newly graduated PhD or candidate who is close to gaining their PhD.

4.) Excellent oral and written communication skills.

5.) The ability to work as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of researchers.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 15 months.
