Research Associate as Bioinformatician

About the role

We are looking for a Research Associate (Bioinformatician) to join us in the Department of Genetics and Genome Biology. In this role you will develop and carry out your own informatics research in one or more of the following bioinformatics research themes in the Department of Genetics and Genome Biology:

  • Extending the data integration and visualisation capabilities of the world’s largest open genome-wide association study database, GWAS Central (http://www.gwascentral.org/)
  • Developing methods, software and interfaces for genotype and phenotype data discovery
  • Using semantics and ontologies to integrate and compare biomedical data
In this role you will take a leading role in determining the direction of bioinformatics research activities in line with agreed informatics goals, whilst also providing guidance and support to other members of the bioinformatics team. 


About you

To be successful in this role you will be a highly motivated individual with a strong background in biomedical research or data management, having experience and knowledge of working in this field. You will have a technical, technology/engineering or scientific degree and a PhD in Bioinformatics or computer science (or soon to be completed).You will also have skills in at least one of Perl, PHP and/or Python and the ability to learn new programming skills as required with experience of deploying and maintaining relational databases such as MySQL or PostGres.

We are looking for a self-starter with a passion for the subject matter. With a good analytical and problem solving capability, you will be pro-active and be motivated by working toward the emergence of new understanding within the field.You'll be a strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, being able to work comfortably both in a team and independently. You will be able to work with minimal supervision, prioritising your own workload to deal with urgent tasks, while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail.You will also be flexible to work at different University sites as required for the role.
