Role Description

Applications are invited for a BHF-funded postdoctoral research associate position. This exciting interdisciplinary project is led by Prof. Jennifer Potts in the Department of Biology in collaboration with Prof. Gavin Thomas (Dept of Biology), Dr Marjan van der Woude (Centre for Immunology and Infection) and Dr Martin Fascione (Dept of Chemistry).

The main purpose of the role is to conduct individual and collaborative research to understand the function of an integral membrane protein essential for staphylococcal biofilm formation. The project will require recombinant protein expression, protein purification and biochemical assays of protein-mediated modification of a polymeric carbohydrate using a range of techniques. The work will involve analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods and writing up and dissemination of research results.

You should have a PhD in Biochemistry or a related subject and experience of recombinant protein expression in E. coli and protein purification and biochemical assays for the functional characterisation of proteins. Previous experience of successful work with membrane proteins would be a significant advantage. Demonstrated interest and/or experience in carbohydrate biochemistry and the molecular microbiology aspects of infection would also strengthen your application. The successful candidate should be willing to work independently as well as part of a team. Excellent communication skills are essential.

Informal enquiries can be made to Prof Jennifer Potts, or for an alternative contact, please email
