Position Summary

We seek a research associate to apply age-structured stock assessment and management strategy evaluation to salmonine species in Lake Michigan as part of a structured decision-making process to aid managers in making decisions for salmonine stocking, as well as to work with QFC professors on other Great Lakes stock assessment and policy evaluations according to project needs and researcher interest. In particular, for the Lake Michigan salmonine project, the postdoctoral associate will work with managers and stakeholders to modify existing stock assessment models for salmonine species in Lake Michigan, conduct management strategy evaluation for potential stocking strategies that could be implemented, and support and participate in the structured decision making process for salmonine stocking. The position will involve engaging multiple stakeholders from the entire Lake Michigan basin at the interface of technical analysis and resource management. The successful candidate may also participate in other QFC activities, including preparation for and delivery of on-line and short-courses on quantitative fisheries methods and participating in consulting projects with QFC supporting partners. The research associate will work directly with Drs. Kelly Robinson and Mike Jones at the QFC. The Quantitative Fisheries Center has a strong reputation for developing relationships with relevant stakeholders for the research and the management of fisheries resources. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain experience highly relevant to professional positions in fishery stock assessment and decision analysis for natural resources management, as well as stakeholder engagement. Initial appointment is for 1 year with possibility of extensions for subsequent years on an annual basis.

Required Degree

Doctorate -fisheries science or related discipline

Minimum Requirements

PhD in fisheries science or related discipline with a strong quantitative background and record of research productivity in quantitative methods.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in conducting stock assessments, simulation modeling, and use of AD Model Builder software is desirable, as well as an experience or desire to work with stakeholders and agency personnel.
