Applications are invited for a Research Associate on the NERC-funded BIOARC (Towards a UK Airborne Bioaerosol Climatology) project. Based in the Williamson Research Centre for Molecular Environmental Science and the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, at the University of Manchester, you will join a cross-disciplinary team of biologists and atmospheric scientists aiming to quantify bioaerosol emissions, leading to improvements in understanding of their roles in physico-chemical, biological, health and climate processes. You will focus on the development and application of DNA-based high throughput sequencing techniques, alongside microscopy and other “multi-omics” biological characterization techniques to constrain the microbial ecology of filtered air samples collected by the NERC FAAM aircraft.

 

You should have or expect to obtain a Ph.D qualification (or equivalent) in microbial ecology or related subjects. You will be well versed in a wide range of microbiological techniques, including DNA sequencing using next generation platforms, quantitative PCR, bioinformatics and also light and electron microscopy. You will be a highly capable, motivated and independent researcher who has a good publication track record and is able to play a dynamic and productive role within a large group of 30+ PDRAs and PhD students.
