The Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Neurodevelopmental Disability Research will be part of the Neurogenetics and Neurodisability & Rehabilitation  Research teams and will lead a laboratory research program that aims to discover new treatments for brain development disorders.  This is a collaborative project that is led jointly by Professor David Amor, A/Prof Anne Voss, A/Prof Paul Lockhart, and A/Prof Marnie Blewitt, and will be conducted across two sites, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (Prof Amor and A/Prof Lockhart) and Walter and Eliza Hall institute (A/Prof Voss and A/Prof Blewitt).

This prestigious Fellowship position is supported by a generous donation from Mrs Pamela Galli and The Lorenzo and Pamela Galli Charitable Fund.  The Lorenzo and Pamela Galli Medical Research Trust is driving an exciting series of collaborations in the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, focusing on childhood developmental disorders and cancer.  One of the goals of the Trust is to support major research projects focusing on finding new medicines to prevent intellectual disability and generating new evidence about the cause, prevention and best treatment for neurodevelopmental disability.

Intellectual disability occurs in 1% of newborns, resulting in lifetime dependency on family and societal support. Traditionally, intellectual disability has been viewed as an untreatable condition. However, in recent years, it has been recognised that this dogma may not apply to all cases. Our program aims to identify new treatments targeted to the chromatin machinery to treat intellectual disability. Through strong links between RCH, MCRI and WEHI scientists, the program will identify mutations in the chromatin machinery in infants with brain development disorders, and study these mutations using in vitroand in vivomodel systems. We anticipate that through this program of research, more children with intellectual disability may receive targeted treatment to ameliorate their condition in the future.

The appointee will take a key role in leading and developing the laboratory arm of this project. The appointee will manage the coordination of the project and take a lead role in day to day execution of the project. This will involve being up-to-date with the relevant literature, design of experiments, data acquisition, coordination of collection of patient samples, analysis and interpretation, presentation of the results in verbal and written form, manuscript preparation and contributions to grant submissions. The position will also include professional contributions to the laboratory, the theme and the research community nationally and internationally. Where required, the appointee may also be required to supervise research assistants, other research staff or postgraduate students and conduct administrative functions connected within the research area.

The Research Fellow will be employed in the Department of Paediatrics and will report to the Galli Chair of Developmental Medicine, Professor David Amor and A/Prof Paul Lockhart. The incumbent will work closely A/Prof Voss at WEHI and collaborating researchers at the Melbourne Children’s Campus as well as nationally and internationally.
