Job description

The person will work at the Campus Coupure of Ugent, more specifically at the Laboratory for aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center. It is the intention to involve the person mainly in bivalve-related research activities, although the applicant will be involved in other research fields at the same time. Bivalve research is focusing on host-microbial interactions in young life stages, whereby probionts, prebiotics components and alternative feed sources are used to better understand the immune system of the host and the infection process of the pathogen. On the other hand, production of bivalves in the North Sea is a research field in full development that will require input of the candidate as well.

As a second major topic, the applicant will be involved in the project Flavoreduc that studies the production of geosmin and 2-mib by bacteria in freshwater fish. It focuses on alternative methods to avoid production of these earth-smelling molecules and to remediate its presence in recirculating systems.

As scientific collaborator, the applicant will be involved in the organization of the English taught MSc. in Aquaculture, which is supported by the ARC lab. This includes the supervision of master students and possibly some teaching of practical labwork and/or courses. Assistance of PhD-students also belongs to the tasks of the future scientific collaborator.

The work will involve both labwork and fieldwork as well as writing project proposals. Quite some activities will consist of designing, constructing and running experiments with bivalves and microalgae. Scientific writing and participation to international symposia is also part of the job, as it is important for the lab to maintain its internationally recognized expertise in aquaculture through peer-reviewed A1 publications.

The applicant will be given a high level of responsibility

Profile of the candidate

The applicant has a keen interest in aquaculture research. Experience in research or aquaculture activities will be an advantage. Because of the diversity of the tasks, the applicant should be very flexible and willing to learn about new research topics that come along in response to approved project fundings. This means that the applicant is willing to study new topics independently and to familiarize himself/herself with new technics.

Laboratory skills in microbiology, genomics, fluorescent microscopy, and histology are an asset as well as skills in modelling, statistics and automatisation of production processes. The person needs to work very accurately.

The person should be fluent in English since it is the working language at the lab. Good knowledge of Dutch is an asset but not a requirement. Scientific English writing skills are required.

The applicant should have the necessary social skills to work in a multi-cultural environment and be communicative towards his/her peers and supervisors.

How to apply

Candidates can send their CV and motivation letter to till 29th of April 2019. In a next step, selected candidates will be invited for an interview in the course of week 19 (week of 6th of May). Start of the contract will be decided in mutual agreement.
