# **Job description**

The Kings College London, School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) comprises over 70 academic groups, hosts 400 personnel and 110 PhD students and provides an outstanding multi-disciplinary environment to pursue cutting-edge cardiovascular and metabolic research ( [https://www.kcl.ac.uk/scms](https://www.kcl.ac.uk/scms)).

 

We study the fundamental molecular, cellular, and physiological processes underlying normal and abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic functions using state-of-the-art core technologies and facilities. We drive the translation of this strong basic science into advances in clinical practice to improve disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, across the Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill King’s campuses. This is facilitated by strong collaborations between clinical and non-clinical academics within our School and leverages the large volume of clinical activity in our partner hospitals.

In addition, the School hosts the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence at King's, which brings together a unique range of internationally renowned scientists and clinicians from across the School and King’s College London to focus on basic and applied research in cardiovascular diseases.

 

The School invites applications for a new non-clinical Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position in Vascular Biology. We are looking for a creative and innovative scientist to establish an independent research programme. Some areas of interest include, but are not limited to: 

- Molecules and mechanisms that regulate angiogenesis and arteriogenesis
- Interaction of vascular cells with other cell types
- Novel insights into the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis
- Biological and RNA based treatments to prevent arterial restenosis

 

We particularly welcome individuals with proven experience in cutting-edge technologies (e.g. organs on a chip, single cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, epigenetics, iPS-derived vascular organoids, non-coding RNAs) and their application in both experimental models and clinical samples. The successful candidates will have a track record of outstanding first or lead-author publications, a demonstrable ability to drive independent research, secure research funding and contribute to teaching.

This is a full time post - 100% full time equivalent.# **Key responsibilities**

 

As a principal investigator, the post holder is expected deliver research excellence in Vascular Biology including high quality publications, supervision of PhD students and to deliver undergraduate/ postgraduate taught education relevant to their area of expertise. In addition, the post holders will:

- Secure research grant funding to support a productive programme of research including collaborations within academia, the NHS and industry.
- Play an active role in fostering a supportive and collegiate work environment.
- Attract and nurture the most promising early career researchers.
- Engage in professional development activities as appropriate.
- Compliance at all times with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations with responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of others in the working environment.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of School and Head of Section.

# **Skills, knowledge, and experience**

 

**Essential criteria **

1. A higher academic degree: PhD or medical equivalent
2. Postdoctoral research experience in a relevant area having shown evidence of research independence.
3. Evidence of having attracted research funding in a relevant area of discovery or translational science or clinical medicine.
4. National and International reputation, recognised as having made an individually significant contribution to their field and/or innovative contributions to the field, with evidence of wider peer esteem.
5. Excellent record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
6. Ability to work effectively with a range of academic, clinical, and professional services colleagues, including across organisations.
7. Experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching and pedagogical/ student experience enhancement

**Desirable criteria**

1. Postgraduate teaching qualification in higher education or working towards one.
