Research Title
Achieving world class livestock enterprises in a post-Brexit world

Research Description

This Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) funded research seeks to combine detailed market and farm data within quantitative economic models to give Britain’s livestock businesses, and their associated value chains, the tools and results that can best ensure they are Brexit-Ready. Information on potential markets, trade deals, policy scenarios and regulations will be scoped out to develop a range of scenarios for testing. To account for consumer retail price response, market adjustments will be estimated via an autonomous partial-equilibrium retail-value-chain-meat farm-livestock market model. For farms with livestock enterprises, a range of profit/loss and balance sheet metrics will be identified under different scenarios of protection/support and farm gate prices; this will establish Brexit-survival thresholds for different business structures. The PhD will identify different business tipping points in the value chain that might cause a collapse of the entire chain to identify vulnerable producers/sub-regions in particular policy and market scenarios. The robustness of the results will be sensitivity tested to quantify the impacts of different policies, outcomes and strategies. The outcomes of this PhD will be: i) Brexit-ready strategies for UK livestock farmers; ii) information on downstream impacts; iii) a bespoke Brexit modelling approach of direct relevance to AHDB levy-payers.

This is a fully funded (fees and stipend), industry sponsored PhD studentship.
