Postdoctoral Fellowship Positions in Biostatistics and Environmental Epidemiology


The Department of Public Health at University of Copenhagen, Denmark offers two postdoctoral fellowship positions in Biostatistics and Environmental Epidemiology. The anticipated start date is March 1, 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter. The initial appointment is for two years, renewals for several years is expected if progress is satisfactory.  


Job Description  

We invite highly qualified, thorough and motivated applicants to apply for the positions. The postdocs will be involved in the projects listed below as well as participating in the daily duties of the Department. Successful candidates will be assigned to the projects based on their interests and background. One position is shared between the Section of Epidemiology and the Section of Biostatistics and in this position; the candidate will spend half of the time in each section. The other position is offered jointly by Section of Biostatistics and the Neurobiology Research Unit, Copenhagen University Hospital.  


The two Postdocs will participate in the following projects  

1. Air pollution and the risk of asthma. A combination of modelled air pollution data and personal data are available from National Danish registries. This information will be combined with data from questionnaires and clinical examinations performed in longitudinal birth cohort studies and used to study the impact of early-life exposure from air from multiple sources on risk of developing asthma.  


2. Effects of environmental exposures in Faroese children. In the Faro Islands, the population is exposed to increased levels of environmental exposures (e.g. to methyl mercury and PFAS) through consumption of contaminated seafood. Data are based on prospective clinical studies of Faroese birth cohorts. Using standard regression models and more sophisticated structural equation models the aim is to estimate the effect of pre- and postnatal exposures on cognitive and immune function outcomes.  


3. Statistical methods for neurobiology. Based on unique neuroimaging data, the Neurobiology Research Unit (NRU) aims to develop new treatments for brain disorders. The postdoc will play a central role as a statistician at NRU and be actively involved in the scientific process including data analysis, statistical counseling and writing papers. Current methodological challenges involve: 1) using machine learning techniques for prediction of treatment response, 2) accounting for the variability generated by the data processing steps, and 3) the use of non-linear structural equation models. Prior experience with the analysis of medical imaging data, in particular PET, MRI, and/or fMRI, is preferred but not required.  


The successful candidate will be responsible of sophisticated statistical analyses of complex data. The specific tasks will include:  

• cleaning and preparation of data  

• designing of epidemiological studies  

• statistical analysis of data  

• publication in international peer-reviewed journals  

• presentation of findings at professional meetings  


The postdoctoral fellow will also be encouraged and mentored to develop new proposals and research initiatives to support additional research. Exchange stays with collaborating research centers in other countries will be optional. Over the course of the position, opportunities to teach at either the graduate or undergraduate level exist.  


Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Statistics/Biostatistics, or other relevant disciplines. Candidates must have excellent skills in quantitative analysis. Epidemiological data analysis and experience in SAS, Stata, R and/or M+ would be an asset. In addition, candidates should have strong English, scientific writing and oral communications skills, as well as the ability to work independently, effectively and collaboratively.

Section of Biostatistics conducts general biostatistical research and methodological development in biostatistics, undertakes teaching of students at various educations, undergraduate as well as postgraduate, and offers biostatistical advice to staff and students in all disciplines of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC or other relevant professional organizations. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
