Faculty Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The position is in the Department of Biotechnology (, which engages in internationally-leading education programmes, and which offers a stimulating environment in the biosciences, combining fundamental research, engineering, and design, all directed towards biotechnological process innovations. The Department covers the areas of biocatalysis, bioprocess engineering, cell systems engineering, environmental biotechnology, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology and society. The Department shares a state-of-the-art building, which the Bionanoscience and Chemical Engineering departments. Working in such close proximity facilitates inter-departmental collaborations on multidisciplinary projects.

Job description
The Bioprocess Engineering research group aims to develop novel concepts for compact, clean and efficient biotechnological manufacturing processes, starting from the fundamental and quantitative knowledge of biomolecular mechanisms, and integrating advanced technological, theoretical and experimental methods. Three directions can be distinguished: high-throughput measurement and modelling of biomolecular properties (1), equipment development (2), and bioprocess integration (3), which are applied to biopharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, bio-based chemicals, and bio-energy.

To further strengthen the Bioprocess Engineering group, an assistant professor is sought with a background in bioprocess engineering and fermentation/cell culture technology. We are especially looking for a colleague with interest in design, analysis and scalability of reactors, process control and process integration for modern industrial applications of biotechnology. He/she will initiate new research lines in the area of bio(pharmaceutical) reactor engineering, with emphasis on (up)scaling of microbial and mammalian cell cultures, process analytical techniques, and/or reactor modelling.

The new staff member will teach and develop courses related to bioprocess engineering in the BSc programmes Life Science and Technology (LST) and Molecular Science and Technology, and in the MSc programmes Life Science and Technology and Chemical Engineering. (S)he will supervise BSc, MSc, PDEng, and PhD students during their research projects.

The ideal candidate has:

  • an MSc in (bio)chemical engineering, or an equivalent programme
  • a PhD related to bioprocess engineering
  • affinity with or drive for teaching
  • proficiency in English, and, for foreign candidates, the willingness to learn the Dutch language to a level sufficient for classroom teaching at the BSc level
  • affinity with research at the interface of academia and industry, and with working in multidisciplinary teams
  • a vision on how to develop a research line in the subject described in the previous paragraph
  • ability to acquire funding, both via competitive individual grants, public-private partnerships and direct industrial funding.

Conditions of employment
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. TU Delft sets specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. If you have less than five years of experience and do not yet have your teaching certificate, we allow you up to three years to obtain this.
