DESCRIPTION

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (https://mcd.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Research Specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Euiseok Kim, the selected candidate will contribute to a neuroscience research program that is focused on the development, connectivity, and genetic identity of cortical circuits. The Assistant Research Specialist will be responsible for mouse colony management, including mouse weaning, breeding, and genotyping. Duties will include mouse brain stereotaxic surgery for viral injections, setting up and running histology pipelines including mouse perfusions, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, as well as taking fluorescent images under microscopes and collecting and analyzing the resulting data. The Assistant Research Specialist will contribute to research projects by maintaining basic lab reagents for molecular biology and histology, participating in writing manuscripts, giving presentations, and assisting with grant proposals. The incumbent will also be required to perform nominal lab management duties, such as keeping safety records and managing lab orders. This position will require the candidate to prioritize accuracy, successfully collaborate with other lab members, and employ excellent problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and critical thinking skills.

 

Applicants with any of the following areas of expertise are particularly valued and strongly encouraged to apply: experience with mouse breeding and colony maintenance; familiarity of cell culture; a demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications or poster presentations; proficiency with MATLAB and/or Simulink; expertise in molecular biology techniques (cloning and PCR); and/or experience with immunohistochemistry.

SALARY
Starting at $49,700, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
An M.A./M.S. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline at the time of application; or a B.A./B.S. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline plus a minimum of two years’ post-baccalaureate research experience (in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline) at the time of application.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time for one year with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
