Position Description


The Department of Clinical Neurosciences (, in partnership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI, in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invites applications for a Contingent Term full-time academic position, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be a member of the Section of Neurology and will be based in the Spinal Cord / Nerve Injury & Pain “NeuroTeam” of the HBI ( He or she will become a key member of the multidisciplinary Calgary Neuromuscular Program of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health (OIPH; ( at the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services (Calgary Zone).


Qualifications include an MD plus an advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in relevant research methodology, Royal College specialist certification in Neurology, clinical fellowship training in neuromuscular disease, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. Demonstrated commitment to research in areas related to neuromuscular disease is required. Ideal applicants will have a track record of research in clinical trial design and methodology. However, candidates with other research interests are also encouraged to apply. Desired candidates must have 10 or more peer-reviewed papers, with the majority of publications as senior or 1st author.


The Department of Clinical Neurosciences and the HBI work collectively in advancing world-class neurological research and innovation, together with exemplary patient care. While duties for this position include the provision of clinical service in the division of Neurology and clinical teaching, including inpatient coverage and call, substantial protected time will be provided for research and the successful candidate will receive an appropriate research startup package. Salary support will be through the Alberta Academic Medicine and Health Services Program in Neurology supported by Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and the Cumming School of Medicine.


Inspired by the vision “Healthy Brains for Better Lives”, the strategic goals of the HBI are to make key, internationally recognized discoveries and transform clinical research in the neurosciences and mental health. To achieve this goal, the HBI has created a “NeuroDiscovery Framework”, which aligns research within three themes of Brain & Behaviour, Neural Injury & Repair and Healthy Brain Aging. Each theme is composed of NeuroTeams organized in a translational continuum, which includes basic, clinical, population and public health researchers. The teams build on a springboard environment of technologies, core facilities and support programs that allow them to pursue their research goals. This highly enriched environment is ideally suited to foster research excellence.
