Postdoc in computational modeling of genetic variants and their impact on transcriptional regulation


The Andersson lab is looking to recruit a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to join our group working on computational biology with a strong focus on enhancers and transcriptional regulation. This project aims to systematically characterize the impact of genetic variants on transcriptional activities using deep learning and to infer models allowing interpretation and prioritization of genetic variants associated with disease. The position will be funded by a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The earliest starting date is 1 April 2019, and duration is 30 months. 



The lab of Robin Andersson focuses on genomics and computational/statistical modeling of transcriptional regulation based on large-scale sequencing data, including experimental data generated from within the lab. We aim to characterize and better understand the architectures and complexities of transcriptional regulation (see e.g. Andersson et al. 2014, Nature, and gain insights into the mechanisms of regulation. The successful candidate is expected to work on projects related, but not limited, to 1) the establishment of a deep learning framework for inference of the determinants of gene regulatory activities and 2) interpretation and prediction of the impact of genetic variants on transcriptional activity. The project will consider two human data sets in-depth: 1) in-house generated CAGE-sequencing data of genotyped lymphoblastoid cells lines for studying the impact of genetic variants on regulatory activities, and 2) CAGE data across the large panel of primary cells, cells lines and tissues profiled in the FANTOM5 consortium, for assessment of cell-type specific determinants of transcriptional activity. 



We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or in a related quantitative discipline. Theoretical understanding and practical experiences with machine learning, statistical modeling, and statistical learning techniques are expected from the applicant. Experiences with deep learning in genomics and the analysis of functional genetic variation are considered a major plus. Importantly, the applicant should have a strong interest in transcription and transcriptional regulation.  


In particular, we are looking for candidates with the following background:

  • A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or in a related quantitative field

  • Strong programming and data analytical skills

  • Documented experience in analyzing high-throughput sequencing data

  • Documented expertise in machine learning and/or statistical learning techniques

  • Fluent English 

Place of employment 

The Andersson lab is based in a highly collaborative environment in the Bioinformatics Centre in the Section for Computational and RNA Biology, which is currently composed of 11 strong research groups. Terms of employment 

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years. Please find more information at
