The Institute of Zoology and Anthropology at the University of Göttingen is offering a

Research Assistant (PhD position)

with 65 % of a full position. Regular working hours will currently be 25.87 hours per week with a limited contract of 3 years. The position should be filled by 01 May 2019. Salary: Pay grade E13 TV-L.

The position is part of the DFG-funded project “Collembola (Arthropoda) communities of forest ecosystems in Changbai Mountain, northeast China: Trophic structure, changes with altitude and response to increased temperature”. The project forms part of the German – Chinese collaboration between the University of Göttingen and the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun.

Your duties

As part of the German – Chinese project team the Research Assistant will investigate Collembola communities of forest ecosystems along altitudinal gradients in northeastern China (Changbai Mountain) with focus on changes in community structure and trophic interactions. Collembola are used as model soil organisms for identifying traits responsible for soil animal community assembly processes across a wide range of environmental conditions, thereby identifying the mechanisms driving these changes and allowing to predict changes in soil animal communities with global temperature changes. Trophic interactions will be investigated using natural variations in stable isotope signatures and lipid analysis. Collembola species will be sequenced using a set of markers allowing to quantify genetic relationships of local species as basis for using community phylogenetics, Traits of species will be mapped on the phylogenetic tree to evaluate phylogenetic signal and allow to identify traits responsible for changes in community composition with altitude.

Your Profile

• You hold a completed master’s/diploma degree in biological sciences or a closely related field.
• You have a background or strong interest in soil ecology, soil biodiversity, and/or invertebrate ecology and genetics.
• You have experience in statistical methods and you are familiar in using R. Previous experience in field and laboratory research would be an advantage.
• You have good oral and written English language skills.

This post is designed to serve in fostering young researchers and scientists and give the successful applicant the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree.
