Job description
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is looking for a PhD candidate on equine gait analysis. The PhD project is a multidisciplinary research project on on-site wireless monitoring of horses for advanced and real-equine gait analysis. This project focuses on the validation and clinical application of advanced sensor-based gait analysis, that can be used by veterinarians to diagnose and monitor lameness in horses and potentially, other animal species.

 

Working at our gait lab, the candidate will have access to the most advanced technology worldwide for gait analysis including high-speed and high-resolution wireless IMU sensors, force/pressure plates, 3D optical motion capture and treadmill. Our research consortium extends to other countries such as Sweden, Germany, UK and Switzerland.

 

The PhD candidate will work on the development and validation of different modalities of equine gait analysis and will be involved in the daily activities of the Equine Gait Analysis Lab. This position includes regular monitoring of orthopedics with advanced gait analysis modalities and use of gait analysis as an outcome parameter for several in-vivo studies.

 

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with a background in sensor data analytics and embedded computing, with a keen interest animal health care and sport. You hold a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Human/Animal Movement Sciences, Veterinary Medicine or similar. You are a team player and interested in working in a multi-disciplinary team. You are interested in contributing to a high quality, impactful team of researchers, companies and practitioners.

 

Offer
We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for one year. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €2,325 and €2,972 (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 % per year. We offer a pension scheme, (partly paid) parental leave, collective insurance schemes and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). The project is performed at the Utrecht University at the Department of Equine Sciences in close collaboration with University of Twente, Pervasive Systems research group at the Department of Computer Science and the companies Technology and Rosmark.
