Mental and Physical Health in the Homeless

We are seeking applicants with an interest and background in working within a community-focussed research setting to investigate the mental and physical health states of people who are homeless in the New England region. The successful applicant will work on a 3-year PhD project based at the University of New England (UNE), in Armidale, NSW Australia.

The PhD project is part of the overall research activities of the Brain-Behaviour Research Group at UNE in collaboration with Homes North, Armidale. The project focuses on how mental and physical health might change when homeless people receive adequate housing.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who has a background in psychology, social work, counselling, neuroscience, mental health and related fields will be considered.

The successful applicant must have had experience working with vulnerable people and working within a research team focussed upon the needs of disadvantaged people. She/he will also have had experience in clinical interviewing vulnerable people.

The project has a significant fieldwork component, including field visits to some nearby parts of the New England region. Strong motivation, willingness to work with people in need and the capacity to relate to others are vital qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English, and have a current driver’s licence. Selection of applicants will be based on merit.

The Scholarship provides a tax free stipend of $27,082.00 per annum (2018 rate) which is indexed annually, plus an additional $5,000.00 living expenses per annum funded by Homes North.
