Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Marine Ecology

 

The Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a position as Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Marine Ecology at the Section of Aquatic Biology. The position is to be filled by 1 August 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter (subject to negotiation).



The position
This tenure track position will strengthen and expand the research in biological oceanography and the ecological processes in the open waters of the ocean. Special focus will be on planktonic organisms and their interactions with fish, and how these processes interplay with the physical and chemical conditions, including climate change. We therefore seek an internationally competitive early-career researcher with a strong academic track-record in marine ecology. Documented experience with quantitative marine ecology and statistical modelling will be an advantage. The appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaborations with other staff members in the section as well as across the Department of Bioscience and other university departments, and participate in and, in part, lead undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision. Furthermore, we expect the appointee to contribute to building research-relationships and collaborations with business and industry through strategic research initiatives.  



Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is an expected and integral part of positions within our department.



Applicants should present their future research avenues and visions for building an independent research group, as well as how they plan to obtain future funding. Qualifications in teaching will be evaluated, and the applicants are encouraged to describe which courses they would like to contribute to and develop in the future. 



The Department of Bioscience 
The Department of Bioscience hosts research programmes, teaching curricula and consultancy that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The department conducts world-class research in the areas of Aquatic Biology and Ecology, Arctic Environment and Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Genetics and Evolution, Microbiology, and Zoophysiology. The Department currently employs approximately 350 academic and technical staff and 75 PhD students. In addition to the PhD-programme, BSc and MSc study programmes with close to 500 students enrolled are offered.

The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Section for Aquatic Biology, which comprises staff specialized in marine and freshwater aquatic systems. The research of the marine group focuses on organisms and ecological processes in the open ocean, coastal sea and estuaries. The candidate
We seek an internationally competitive early-career researcher with an excellent academic track record in marine ecology. Applicants must in their application present a work plan and research strategy for their proposed research within the field of marine ecology. Moreover, the candidate must be able to demonstrate promise of outstanding capabilities in independent research, dissemination and funding. A tenure track appointment requires demonstration of independent and novel research initiatives combined with successful postdoc positions including international experience as demonstrated by a significant number of international publications.



Successful candidates are expected to: 

• Conduct research of the highest international standard 
• Establish and develop their own research space within the Department 
• Establish synergies between own research and related research activities 
• Contribute to relevant teaching and supervision at the Department
• Be able to communicate and teach in Danish within four years after employment
• Supervise bachelor, master and PhD students 
• Complete postgraduate teacher training for Assistant Professors at Aarhus University 
• Be granted competitive research funding from external funding bodies 
• Contribute to the strategy and working environment of the Department



Depending on the qualifications of the appointee, they will have the opportunity to apply for a competitive start-up grant ensuring a successful start in building their research space.



Qualifications
The following professional and personal qualifications are required: 



• PhD degree in marine ecology, oceanography or related fields
• Documented high-level research qualifications
• Proven publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
• Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision
• Experience in communication of research in a wide context 
• Experience in international research collaboration and networking
• Ability to write and speak English fluently

In case of a positive review, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor/Senior Researcher at Aarhus University.

Application procedure 


Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process. 



Formalities and salary range 
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
