Pharmacotherapies have dramatically evolved, and they form one of the most common interventions both in human and veterinary health care. The increasing complexity of therapeutic interventions is a significant challenge for medication safety and effectiveness worldwide in all care settings. High quality research applying front line methods is needed to identify and characterize novel hazardsand find solutions for preventing and minimizing the risks. Novel methodologies are also needed to study effectiveness of pharmacotherapies, taking into account clinical, humanistic, economic and environmental outcomes.

The position is a joint position between the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The research, expertise and teaching field of the professorship is Medication Safety and Effectiveness in Human and Veterinary Medicine. Expertise in systems-based risk management and its application to pharmacotherapies are needed. Special emphasis will be paid on methodologies in medication safety and effectiveness research, including those in pharmacotherapy related risk management interventions, health technology, and the use of register data for various purposes relevant to the area of the position. The teaching will focus on advanced research methodologies at master and doctoral level in medication safety and effectiveness in a multidisciplinary environment within HOH Helsinki One Health network organization.

Number of companion animals sharing our houses and living environment is increasing. Dogs and cats have become family members whose care and medical treatment are comparable to methods used in human medicine. Recent evidence has proved that companion animal owners benefit of the presence of pets. High quality and high impact research is needed to identify hazards in pet medication for early recognition of potential risks in the veterinary service chain. Lack of critical information on effectiveness of animal pharmacotherapy and medical treatment generates delayed cure and unnecessary suffering. Health economic aspect of the added value of animals to human health and welfare has recently become societally noticed and highly valued. Exhaustive health data banks of companion and production animals would best benefit of intensive data mining and block chain technology.

The Helsinki One Health network organization will form the operational framework for this position. Even though the Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are the home faculties of the position the operations are expected to extend to other faculties involved in HOH, i.e., Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and Faculty of Social Sciences, as well as governmental and other stakeholder organizations contributing to medication safety and effectiveness of human and veterinary care.
