Position description

The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in the area of comparative biomechanics, broadly defined.

We seek exceptional scientists researching integrative organismal design, biomechanics, or functional morphology in either aquatic or terrestrial taxa (which may include plants or animals, with particular interest in humans both past and present). We are particularly interested in candidates doing integrative work combining laboratory, field, and modeling approaches (or spanning multiple timescales or levels of organization) to answer fundamental questions in organismal design, functional adaptation, evolutionary morphology, or related fields.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a thriving externally funded research program, to effectively train and mentor students, to contribute to instruction in IB’s core courses as well as in their area of expertise, and to contribute to an equitable and inclusive department and campus. They will join a department with a strong multidisciplinary approach and will be expected to complement and to create connections with already strongly represented fields such as ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, neuroscience, and paleobiology. UCB has exceptional strengths in many areas of biology and engineering, and our new colleague will have the opportunity to partner in research, teaching and leadership in both IB and the larger Berkeley community.

Competitive candidates will demonstrate evidence of outstanding research productivity, potential to obtain external funding, a commitment to excellence in teaching and in mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs, and a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, non-discrimination, and belonging consistent with Berkeley’s principles of community.

IB is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
